“Learn From Each Other”

Date: May 3 2017

Daystar Academy’s Head of School Ms. Elizabeth Hardage recently presented at the Chinese International School’s 2nd Dual-Language Symposium in Hong Kong. Over a thousand people attended the symposium, which featured Professor Emeritus and linguistics expert Stephen Krashen as the keynote speaker.

Under the theme “Learn From Each Other”, Ms. Hardage shared with a group of keen educators how Daystar Academy is combining 21st Century Learning with Chinese National Standards. Below Ms. Hardage shares some of her reflections and takeaways from the symposium.

The CIS Dual Language Conference was a great opportunity to connect with fellow bilingual educators from around Asia. I not only attended this conference, but presented as well at the conference because I believe deeply in the need for educators to collaborate and work together to support bilingual education throughout China.

After attending this conference, I realized how few schools in China have students in elementary school learn all content subjects through English and Chinese. I shared with educators at the conference that Daystar’s educational philosophy is that we have to begin the language acquisition process for all content subjects at such an early age in order to ensure that they graduate 12th grade with linguistic and cultural fluency in two languages and cultures.

Another key take-away for me was realizing how rare it is to have such qualified and dedicated academic team focused on supporting the execution of such a high quality program.

I look forward to staying in touch with many of the educators that I met last weekend and am excited to be a part of the bilingual education field in China!

Ms. Hardage will be the main presenter at our Sanlitun Informational Session on Saturday May 13th. Join us to find out how Daystar is combining 21st Century Learning with our bilingual curriculum, and what makes our program so unique.
